In short

  • Fear of the dentist (dental phobia) is common and can be managed.
  • Many people postpone treatment out of fear, and the problem grows.
  • Local anesthesia prevents pain; sedation helps with fear and anxiety.
  • There are different levels, from relaxation techniques to sedation.
  • Mentioning it at your assessment lets us tailor the experience to you.

01Fear of the dentist is normal (and manageable)

A great many people feel anxious at the thought of an extraction or surgery. Sometimes it comes from a bad past experience, the sounds, the needles or simply the unknown.

What matters is knowing you don't have to “tough it out”. Saying it openly is the first step so we can adapt everything —the pace, the explanation and sedation— to what you need.

02Pain and fear are not the same

Pain is controlled with local anesthesia: the procedure isn't felt. Fear is something else: the dread before and during. That's why, beyond anesthesia, adding sedation sometimes helps you go through it relaxed.

Understanding this difference helps a lot: the real memory is almost always “much calmer than I imagined”.

You don't have to be brave to come in. You just have to tell me you're afraid: we'll handle the rest together.

03Options to go through it calmly

Depending on your case and your anxiety level, there's a range of options: from empathetic, unhurried care with clear explanations, to different degrees of sedation that keep you calm and relaxed during surgery.

When sedation is needed, it's done with proper assessment and monitoring for your safety. At the consultation we decide together which option fits you best.

04How to take the first step

You don't have to arrive “brave”. You can message on WhatsApp and say you're afraid: that alone starts a different experience. Going to an assessment doesn't commit you to surgery that day.

Resolving things in time keeps a small problem from becoming a big (and more feared) one. Fear shouldn't cost you your health.

·Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to be so afraid of the dentist?

Yes, it's very common (it's called dental phobia). It's not an overreaction. What matters is to say it so we can adapt the care, the pace and, if needed, sedation to you.

Does sedation remove pain?

Pain is controlled by local anesthesia. Sedation helps with fear and anxiety: it keeps you relaxed during the procedure. They're usually used together.

Will I be asleep with sedation?

It depends on the level of sedation chosen for your case. There are options where you're calm and relaxed but awake. Everything is decided at the assessment and done safely.

Can I just come to ask without being operated that day?

Of course. The assessment is exactly to understand your case, answer questions and plan. It doesn't commit you to surgery the same day.
